What Is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, ends and expels a pregnancy using two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.
The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a necessary hormone for a pregnancy to continue. As a result, the pregnancy will end.
Then, misoprostol is taken 24-48 hours later to cause the uterus to contract to expel the pregnancy and related tissue through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.
What Are the Side Effects and Risks?
Medical procedures and drugs come with side effects and risks to consider.
The abortion pill causes abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding. Other side effects can include upset stomach, vomiting, fever, chills, diarrhea, and headache.
There also may be some level of pain, which can vary by woman.
While not every woman will experience a complication after a medical abortion, it’s critical to be aware before deciding. The risks include:
- Incomplete abortion (which may require a surgical procedure)
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach
In some cases, mental health issues may arise. Research also indicates there is an 81% increased risk of mental health problems for women who have had abortions.
Consider how you may feel mentally and emotionally after an abortion procedure before choosing this option.
